Grit Blasting
Grit blasting, often referred to as sand blasting, shot blasting or abrasive blasting, is the cleaning of a surface by projecting abrasive media at the substrate at high velocity. Grit blasting is an extremely effective method of surface preparation for removing rust, old paint and scale. Selecting the grit is key to ensuring the correct surface profile and standard of cleanliness is achieved to meet the project specification.

Captive Blasting
Captive blasting, also referred to as captive shot blasting, captive abrasive blast cleaning and blastracking, is where a steel or concrete surface is prepared using captive blasting machines that recycle the shot. A mix of steel shot and angular grit is usually used to achieve the specified surface profile. Over enough square meterage, these machines can become very cost effective by reducing shot used and cleaning time, whilst still achieving the same standard of cleanliness as traditional grit.

Wet Blasting
Wet blasting, often referred to as wet abrasive blasting and similar to slurry blasting, is a method of dustless grit blasting where clean water is injected at the blast nozzle to dampen the grit and help contain the dust. The level of surface cleanliness is a different classification to that achieved by dry grit blasting, but where the coating system and site allows this method of surface preparation can be an extremely effective means of containing the dust and preventing local contamination.

Bristle Blasting
A method of tool preparation used to achieve a comparable standard of surface cleanliness as grit blasting or shot blasting. During bristle blasting, bristles on a rotary bristle head are propelled from a bar against the substrate which mimics the treatment of grit blasting. A surface profile can be achieved and it is completely dustless and more cost effective over smaller areas.

Water Jetting
The pressure of the water jet will determine the standard of surface cleanliness achieved and is determined by the specification. Low pressures can clean the surface from dirt, contaminants and soluble salts which can cause premature defects of the coating system if left unaddressed. Higher pressures can remove unsound coatings and even all coatings back to bare steel. The benefit of water jetting over grit blasting is no abrasive to buy or clean, however no surface profile is provided.

Tool Preparation
An ideal method of surface preparation for repairing localised areas of corrosion and coating breakdown using a combination of hand- and power-tools. Surface tolerant and "ultra" surface tolerant coating systems have been developed to be applied over tool prepared substrates whilst still providing exceptional long term corrosion protection and coating performance.
Corrous Protective Coating Division

Corrosion Protection
From steel bulk liquid storage tanks and silos, to pipework, gantries, bridges and jetties - corrosion is a challenge for any asset owner. Our extensive knowledge base and experience within the protective coatings industry allows us to select the most suitable coating systems for your requirement, offering in excess of 25 years of protection against rust, weathering and deterioration.

Chemical & Abrasion Resistance
For harsher applications, such as to protect steel or concrete from acid, or factory floor painting to protect against heavy traffic, we can apply the right coatings to suit. By carefully selecting the resin, from epoxies and vinyl esters, to polyurea and polyurethanes, we can protect your surface from whatever you throw at it!

Tank Lining & Bund Lining
Protect your bulk storage tank with a high quality, expertly installed protective lining system that prevents leaks, stops corrosion, and ensures structural integrity is maintained. From protecting the steel or concrete from aggressive chemicals, to ensuring compliant storage of aviation fuel or drinking water, we can apply the right specialist lining system to meet your needs.

Intumescent Coatings
We offer both hydrocarbon and cellulosic passive fire protection across all site based applications including mesh based and mesh-free. Our intumescent coating systems provide life saving time in the event of a fire.

Reinforced Coatings
From fibreglass repairs, to fully reinforced tank linings offering extreme protection from harsh stored products, we can provide it all. Using a combination of chopper guns and chopped strand matt applications, we have the right coating systems to solve any corrosion challenges.

Thermal Insulating Coating
A bright spotlight throughout the industry is currently being shone upon corrosion under insulation (CUI) where steel can rust and rot out of sight underneath insulation/lagging, often leading to catastrophic and costly results. Our thermal insulation coating solutions provide comparable thermal efficiency with significant cost savings and performance benefits - a fantastic alternative to traditional lagging.

A CASE STUDY - INSPECTION-LED COATING REPAIRS
Case Study: Fuel Tank Roof Coating Failure Remediation
Major UK Transport Hub | Aviation Fuel Storage
Project Snapshot
Corrous Industrial Group was engaged to remediate premature failure of a non-skid roof coating system on newly installed bulk fuel storage tanks at a major UK transport hub.
Within 12 months of commissioning, cracking and delamination posed an immediate risk to asset integrity and safety.
The Challenge
Coating breakdown on tank roofs is critical.
Once adhesion is lost, moisture and salts migrate beneath the coating, driving hidden underfilm corrosion that can spread rapidly beyond visible defects.
Left unaddressed, failure can escalate into:
accelerated corrosion and section loss
widespread system breakdown
safety hazards from delaminating debris
high-cost future repairs and downtime
Root Cause
Our ICorr-certified Protective Coating Inspectors confirmed the failure was consistent with coating application outside specified environmental curing conditions, resulting in premature loss of adhesion.
Corrous Solution
Corrous delivered a compliant long-term reinstatement programme, including:
Removal of failed coating via mechanical prep and 7,000 psi water jetting
Verification of underfilm corrosion migration
Surface profile restoration and feather edging
Continuous atmospheric monitoring throughout works
Application of a high-performance epoxy/polyurethane system with broadcast bauxite aggregate
Full inspection oversight and QAQC documentation
Results Delivered
12% additional defective area identified beyond initial inspection
Programme duration reduced by approximately 30% through staged sequencing
Full ICorr Level 3 inspection control and photographic evidence
Audit-ready QAQC close-out pack issued on completion
Client Feedback
“Professional, detail-focused, and highly competent across both internal and external tank coating works. I would have no hesitation in recommending them.”
